As a business you can take steps to reduce your use of disposable plastics. Contact us if you have a query about using alternatives to single use plastics or would like advice.
If you are a hospitality business there are some simple things that you can do to get started:
Think about plastics in the design of your food and drink
Provide customers with refillable bottles of sauces, sugar lumps instead of sachets, small jugs of milk or a self-serve thermos instead of single use milks. Avoid giving out plastic straws or stirrers. But don’t start using “biodegradable” or “compostable” plastics without getting more advice – as these items often cost more and are not necessarily a solution. Plastic Aware will be able to advise you on this – contact us to find out more.
Offer tap water as standard
Provide tap water where customers can help themselves – and fill up their own re-usable bottles. At Plastic Aware we are rolling out the national Refill scheme on the Isle of Wight and will be encouraging businesses to register as refill stations on the Refill app.
Offer discounts for customers who bring their own cups
By rewarding customers that are already being more sustainable you can boost your own sustainable business credentials. Pret a manager is one of the bigger chains that is now offering a 50 pence discount on hot drinks for people who bring their own refillable cups – Costa also offers a discount. Wightlink, French Franks on the Isle of Wight and others are offering discounts for people who bring a refillable cup – if you find a local business that offers a discount for people bringing their own refillable cup do get in touch with us via Facebook.
Change your business model
If your business is predicated on using single use products then it could be time to think about future proofing – or evolving your business to a more sustainable alternative. Contact us to find out how to start doing this.
Please get in touch if your business has found ways to reduce consumption of single use plastic use that you would like to share.
